Shared hardware, separate workloads
Virtualization allows multiple virtual machines to run on a host. Each can have its own operating system and role, while sharing physical resources. This can simplify consolidation, but CPU, memory and storage demand still add up across the workloads.
Plan the dependencies
Check application support, licensing, virtual networking and storage before migration. Avoid treating a snapshot as an independent backup. A single host still needs a failure and recovery plan; moving several services onto it can increase the impact of its outage.
Operate and test
Document virtual machines and administrative access. Monitor resource pressure and backup results. Test a representative restoration and user workflow after changes. Choose the platform and support model according to the organisation's skills and requirements.
