Match the key identifier

Record the recovery key ID shown on the screen. The recovery key is different from the Windows password or activation key. Look for the matching identifier in the authorised recovery location; choosing a key for another device will not unlock this one.

Check legitimate storage locations

Depending on setup, the key may be in the owner's Microsoft account, the organisation's management system, a printed record or a saved file. On a company device, contact IT. Never post the full recovery key in a public forum or send it to an unverified person.

Avoid destructive shortcuts

If the key cannot be found, pause before resetting or reinstalling Windows: those actions may destroy access to existing data. There is no promised generic bypass for properly encrypted data. After recovery, store the key securely outside the device.
